Dare 2 Care is bringing community together with celebrity basketball event
An Alabama nonprofit organization is hoping to bring the Wiregrass community together with a celebrity basketball tournament later this year.
“The overall objective of this is to show peace and unity,” Theresa Strachan, president of Dare 2 Care, said. “I’m a Dothan native and just want to do something to make an impact and try to get these kids’ heads back on straight.”
During a regular meeting of the Houston County Commission on Tuesday, Strachan gave a presentation to commissioners on the purpose of the event and what more the organization needs to make it possible.
The event, titled “State of Emergency; Stop The Violence, Cease The Fire,” is tentatively scheduled to take place on Saturday, Dec. 2 in Dothan. Several statewide and national celebrities are expected to be brought in to play basketball against local law enforcement and high school students. The two teams will be named Peace and Unity.

Outside of the game, celebrities will sign autographs and speak, and high school students will take part in a $1,000 to the win dunk contest at halftime. Attendees will also hear remarks from families who’ve lost loved ones to gun violence later on in the program.
“Two families will be speaking; one of a solved murder, one of an unsolved murder,” Strachan said. “They’ll give the demographics as to what goes on after everything has occurred.”
Strachan believes bringing the celebrities in to speak will have a substantial impact on youth.
“If these people come into a city and show kids the difference between music and real life, I personally feel like they will listen to it a little bit more than they will if one of us spoke to them,” Strachan said. “We are showing unity with having the police play on the teams with the celebrities and high school students. Unfortunately, celebrities are raising our kids right now through their music or athletic talents.”
Currently the organization is seeking $15,000 to go toward advertising, uniforms, building rental, and getting celebrities and law enforcement involved. Houston County chairman Brandon Shoupe is committed to helping make the event a success.
“I think this is a great thing,” Shoupe said. “We’ve certainly seen a spike in violence over the last few years. I appreciate people like yourself for stepping up and trying to make the situation better. A lot of times when there is any problem in society, people turn to a government to solve it. But at the end of the day, its people that have to step up and make things happen. It’s amazing that you’re doing this and hopefully we can all be there on December 2nd.”
Aside from Dothan, similar events are expected to take place in Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile, and Huntsville.
