Nearly half of Brits say they decided not to go on holidays abroad this summer, due to feeling the effects of the cost of living.
A new survey found that 40% of Brits chose to forego trips to the likes of Spain, Greece and France, opting to stay at home instead, although it’s not clear whether they then opted to book UK holidays as an alternative. The study, conducted by InteriorNet with polling site FindOutNow, revealed that Brits chose to stay home in an attempt to save money.
InteriorNet commissioned the research after seeing a spike in people searching for affordable home-design solutions on its site. The study found that the majority of Brits say they are spending more time at home, compared to the period before the cost of living crisis. However, over half of those surveyed said they stuck to their original holiday plans, from city breaks to all-inclusive holidays.
Of course for those who do opt for a staycation, the UK is full of gorgeous places. We’re talking beaches worthy of the Caribbean, one of the world’s most beautiful islands, and the most underrated city break in Europe, to name a few.

Recently the UK’s most popular beach was revealed, with Brits saying that it ‘feels like abroad’ thanks to its ‘out of this world’ views. Kynance Cove in Cornwall topped new rankings thanks to its white sand beach, turquoise waters, and gorgeous scenery.
One visitor wrote in a Tripadvisor review: “This place had been on our bucket list for years and OMG it did not disappoint. The views are out of this world, makes you appreciate how beautiful the UK can actually be, however you could mistake it for being abroad, the sea was that gorgeous in colour. Made it all more worth it as it was hot sunny day too.”
Unfortunately, not everyone has been left impressed with a break in the UK. One tourist recently slammed the nation as ‘tatty’ and ‘grim’, blaming Tories for some of the ‘disgraceful’ run-down areas they saw.
Disgruntled visitor Alison, who used to live in the UK, said that recent visits had felt “shocking” as she saw “dysfunctional, high streets boarded up, trains and buses no shows, broken machines, signs of decay and poverty everywhere”. Although she conceded that there are “pockets of loveliness” in the country, the unimpressed tourist added that the “majority is grim”.
In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter) she added: “It is disgraceful how run-down it has been allowed to get. I could also go on: the ever-growing number of pawn shops, frequently situated next to betting shops. A sign of economic need if there ever was one. Ads for short-term loans and pay on instalment options. Really bloody awful.”
The disgruntled visitor – who says she has spent several years living in different European countries – levelled blame at the Conservative Party. She concluded: “I cannot wait for the Tories to be out of power.”
For those who would prefer to head to sunnier shores, the good news is that there are still plenty of holiday deals to be found, whether you’re after an all-inclusive package, cheap minibreak, or want to tick a certain destination off the bucket list.
