Rochester Fire Department to adopt new work schedule with 24-hour shifts
The Rochester Fire Department is shifting to a 24-hour working schedule.
The city and Rochester Firefighters Local IAFF 1071, the city’s firefighters’ union, came to an agreement on a new contract, which includes a trial period to test out the new scheduling system.
The current schedule consists of:
Working 10-hours shifts for three daysGetting two days offWorking 14-hour shifts for three nightsFour days off
The new schedule will consist of:
Working a 24-hour shift for one dayGetting two days offWorking a 24-hour shift for one dayGetting four days off
The firefighters’ union released a statement Monday, saying the new schedule will have health and safety benefits for workers.
The full statement from union vice president Matt Murphy reads:
We wanted to move to the 24hr schedule because of the health and safety benefits compared to our old schedule. After a busy night, your body takes a day and a half to recover to get back to your normal circadian rhythm. If you have a busy night your first or second night while working three nights in a row, your body does not have time to recover before the next shift. The old schedule opens our members up to fatigue, which leads to injuries and accidents the second and third night in. The new schedule gives us more flexibility with training. Without and afternoon relief time, daytime training can go later in the day. 73% of North America works some version of the 24hour schedule.
The new schedule is set to go into effect at the start of 2024.
