MCI drill held in Strodes Mills
Nearly 75 emergency responders from local fire and EMS organizations as well as local EMA and Mifflin County School District converged on Sunday on the field across from Krise Transportation in Strodes Mills to simulate a bus accident.
This Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) training drill sponsored by Krise Transportation was created to test emergency responders and give the bus drivers from Krise an idea of what to expect in the event of a real life emergency.
Event Coordinator Kelley Shoop, an EMT at Fame EMS, said Emergency Services representatives have been meeting off and on for around six months to go over expectations of what they each wanted to accomplish.
The representatives from Krise Transportation wanted to get emergency responders more acquainted with the ins and outs of the buses as bus accidents are not common in the area. However, accidents happened twice last year in November and December.
Krise Transportation Shop Manager Mark Bagrosky said he felt the evolution went fairly well and plans on taking lessons he personally learned back to the shop’s upcoming safety committee meetings to discuss policies for drivers to follow in the event of an emergency. Most of the shop’s drivers were present, sitting about 100 feet away watching the events unfold.
Shoop added that Krise Transportation Shop had 19 patient actors of various ages who were all successfully extricated from the bus in 25 minutes. The actors were all ready to be transported within an additional 20 minutes.
Shoop also stated that this training happened at a perfect time due to a recent generational transition in local emergency service. This training was especially important due to the recent influx of newer EMS providers in the area who were unfamiliar with local MCI operations.
The simulation gave all attendees a chance to work together with a larger number of patients and use MCI related tools. One tool used were MCI patient tags which are attached to patients in a larger scale incident like this simulation. MCI Tarps were also used as areas where patients with various levels of severity in injuries were placed to be triaged and transported to the hospital.
Fire and EMS organizations represented at the drill were West Granville Fire Co., Junction Fire Co., McVeytown Fire Co., City Hook & Ladder, Granville Fire Co., Heritage Fire & Rescue, Fame EMS, McVeytown EMS, Milroy EMS, and local fire police. Mifflin County EMA Director Phil Lucas and Mifflin County School District Transportation Coordinator Josh Pennpacker were also on site participating.
