RBA on Alert as Australia’s Monthly CPI Rises in August

SYDNEY—Australia’s monthly consumer-price index rose 5.2% in August, snapping a recent run of declines and keeping the Reserve Bank of Australia on alert for the prospect of a further interest rate increase before the end of the year.

The annual inflation rate in August compared with July’s 4.9%, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said Wednesday. The rise was in line with the expectations of economists and in part attributed to a jump in fuel costs.
